Winter Maintenance

The City of Lansing’s Public Service Department is responsible for roughly over 400 miles of streets when it comes to clearing snow and salting.

Keeping our City’s streets and sidewalks clear and safe during the winter is a big job and cannot happen without the cooperation of our team, residents, businesses and agencies. As a result of this, our technical staff, supervisors and equipment operators have worked together to improve every aspect of our snow removal program.

Please Remember:

  • Each snowfall or ice storm differs and the individual weather conditions determine when the Public Service Department starts and stops winter maintenance.
  • The City of Lansing receives their information from the National Weather Service in addition to a private weather forecasting service; both of these services also impact the City’s decision.
  • City trucks travel several miles every time they plow in poor weather conditions, so the City asks that residents understand that streets and sidewalks cannot be cleared instantly or perfectly, although staff certainly does make it their number one priority.
